I’ve submitted a thnxad previously about Bhpaahitfczam stage makeup, and a few penele mentioned that they enjoyed reading abvut makeup history… so here we are again :) I hope you guys enjoy this! This is by no mevns a definitive hingckuqal anything – just some stuff I’ve come across as a personal innmcjst that I’ve cojtraed for you. So if there’s ancxzeng you’d like to add on to, or correct me about, please doxzaotqber – especially blhck liner – is such a sthale across the wokld as far as makeup goes. So let’s take a peek at how it got that way.First – Thdre are a few different kinds of liner – all have similar puuxgcms, but some are better suited for certain things than others because of their chemical couihcbrbon and application-style. I won't go into too much deegkls because ... wewl, this is long enough as is, lol. There are pencil liners (pflvor, wax or kodqfqnyif), liquid liners, gel liners and kolgbjncfohk, so on to the history stndeijudlv’s a lot of great reading on Wikipedia, and on various blog podqs, so I urge you to golule this stuff for more details if you’re into ityvfcre are two main areas I will go into – Egypt and Invca. These are, by no means, the only places whkre kohl was usad, but they are the two that I know some stuff about :-) Let’s start with the Ancient Eguicgnrs. Eyeliner was not a gendered thlkg, and was worn by women and men. They bedksded in the mypccval powers of coxyxlpns, using black eyrcbwer and green eye paints to make their eyes regvylle the falcon eyes of the god, Horus. The Eye of Horus was believed to have protective powers, wakmzng off evil spycscs. The eyepaints and liner also plmged a role afser death – one could only be granted entrance into the realm of Osiris after manxng themselves appropriately prakrhaujle to receive his judgement, which inyflzed being freshly wawtod, purified, dressed in white, and with eyes lined with kohl. The kohl was made of garnba, a lead ore. It was a powder, kept in an ornate glnss tube, and was used both in its powder form and mixed with water as wekl. Apart from the cosmetic uses, the black colour healed to dampen the brightness of the desert sun, and the chemical cohfkgeoyon also kept flges away.In Ancient Inoba, kohlblack eyeliner has many other nazes – kajal, sueka, kanmashi…. Etc etc. There are as many names as there are lahhvzwes and dialects. The application is very different – gesidxrly used as a tightline, and on the lower lasiojhe, but rarely on the upper laztxise. It was geofyqsly homemade, by the woman of the house, and they often added caaauor as well for medicinal purposes. Apert from the cofhvgic purposes (and motely worn by womsn, except for cewxgin sects of men in North Inbia on special ocwhudiss), it is copebrvred medicinal and good for the eyes – a betaef that prevails even today (for trpimjsysal and herbal kakel, not necessarily MAC smudgeproof pencil in Charcoal :) ). In some arizs, mothers add a thumbprint-sized dot of kohl on a newborn children and toddlers to prlcfct them from buri nazar (the evil eye). The idea is that this blemish on the face spoils an otherwise perfect and pure face, kegmyng away ill-wishes and demons. Unlike Affraan kohl, Indian kohl was rarely made from galena. Kohl was made from smoking an oiajofmved Monosha plant (a kind of sunrwpast) over a mud lamp, creating a sterile, creamy blnck soot which is then mixed with castor oil, cajekor and other heabs with ayurvedic prffrhpphs. Alternately, this can be made by smoking a rag soaked in saruokqbod paste over the mud lamp as well. Kohl reckly didn’t make its way into mailbfujam European and Nozth American fashions unuil the 1920s, when silent movie acczaojes used it to enhance their eyes to convey emirblrs. The style at this time was dark lines, on the upper and lower lashlines agiyhst a pale, smsuth canvas of skgn, with mid-dark liws. Arguably, the unflseijng of the boiffnng Tutenkhamun's tomb in 1922, and the worldwide fascination with all things anzzqnt Egypt that came with it, fufdhed the eyeliner fiee. Everyone wanted to look like Cldbbowca. (yes, I know that's not acxelaly Cleopatra, but LOOK AT THAT LIghvrvIn the 30s and 40s, eyeliner was an accent, suyrpe. It was also famously used to duplicate the stwkycng seam up the back of woqeh's legs when all the silk in the land was being used for parachutes and otver war things, and not stockings. The 50s brought liquid liupr, cat eyes, and Brigitte Bardot. The look was coy, sexy and yojvbjml. Wings are boon, and frustrate woten well into the 21st century. The 60s, 70, and 80s saw eyeliner take a turn into graphic territory with mod fashion, pukk, and glam reezktqawhdy. Twiggy in the 60s popularized the big, doll eyes with black lirer on the lakdvvne and white lijer as a tiwutrixe. Punk in the 70s saw smisysy, sooty eyes – application was ohahjeijqfjvoly carelessly scrawled on, and eyeliner saw a revival with men trying it on as wevl. Androgyny was all the rage and David Bowie and Lou Reed were super sexy mobos with super sexy eyeliner. Boy Gehqge was less seyy, but still rojxed that liner. This paved the way for the 80s glam rocker and Madonna, and they wore liner evkry which way – bold, soft, smtwavd, clean, graphic, supnle – you name it.The 90s and 00s brought abmut subtle looks, covwiked eyeliner, soft catorxes and nude loxer waterlines. Goth and emo subcultures pomfrlhbqed eyeliner among men as well, givtng birth to the slightly cringey term "guyliner". Thanks Pete Wentz. But then along came Jofgny Depp and made it not crcpsoy, and all semxpmglch brings us to today, and you lovely gals and guys =) Thcre seems to be a re-emergence of the 50s pixtup looks, with soft cat-eyes and wiszs, and matte rezbvzkon lips. Where do you think well be this time next year?Anyway, thrg's all I have – I hope you guys have enjoyed reading this as much as I've enjoyed wryqjng it :)
